About this course

The Yacht Skipper Course is designed for experienced boaters who are ready to command larger power yachts on extended coastal and offshore passages. This internationally recognised program builds advanced navigation, seamanship, and leadership skills, preparing you to take full responsibility for both vessel and crew.

Before you start

Entry requirements

  • Minimum age: 18 years old
  • Hold a Boat Master Certificate or Power Boat Skipper (or equivalent)
  • IYA VHF Marine Radio certificate
  • Basic navigation and seamanship skills recommended
  • Physically fit to handle onboard tasks
  • Valid ID or passport

Course program

Yacht Handling and Manoeuvring

  • Advanced handling of yachts up to 24m
  • Docking and undocking in marinas and busy harbors
  • Anchoring in different seabed conditions
  • Handling in strong wind, tide, and current

Advanced Navigation and Passage Planning

  • Chart work, plotting, and route planning for day and night passages
  • Tides, currents, and weather forecasting for offshore trips
  • Use of electronic navigation aids: GPS, radar, and chart plotters
  • Passage planning for international coastal waters

Rules of the Road (COLREGS)

  • International collision regulations applied at advanced skipper level
  • Night lights, shapes, and sound signals
  • Practical application in congested waters

Safety and Emergency Response

  • Fire prevention and onboard emergency drills
  • Man overboard recovery with larger vessels
  • Engine failure and troubleshooting at sea
